If you’ve been feeling bloated, constipated, sluggish, tired or simply not like yourself, it’s completely understandable that the idea of a detox sounds appealing.
Search online, and you’ll find endless juice cleanses, detox teas, water fasts and supplements promising to ‘flush toxins’, boost your energy and leave you feeling amazing.
As a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner, I don’t usually start with detox. In fact, it’s often one of the last things we focus on.
That might sound surprising, but there’s a very good reason why.
Your Body Is Already Detoxifying
Your body doesn’t wait for a detox programme to begin detoxifying. Every minute of every day, your liver, kidneys, digestive system and lungs are processing and eliminating substances, while your skin contributes through sweating.
The goal isn’t to ‘switch detox on’. The goal is to support the systems that are already working incredibly hard for you.
The Question I Ask First
When someone comes to see me with bloating, constipation, fatigue, hormone symptoms, headaches or inflammation, I don’t immediately think, ‘Let’s detox.’
Instead, I ask, ‘Why is your body struggling in the first place?’
Functional Diagnostic Nutrition is about looking upstream and asking why symptoms have developed, rather than simply trying to suppress them.
Why I Work Backwards
Imagine your kitchen sink is blocked. If you keep turning on the tap, eventually the sink overflows. The solution isn’t more water; it’s removing the blockage.
The body can be similar. If you’re constipated, dehydrated, chronically stressed, nutrient deficient or sleeping poorly, your natural elimination pathways may already be under pressure. Jumping into an intensive detox before addressing those foundations can sometimes leave you feeling worse instead of better.
Bloating and Constipation Matter
Many people search for a detox because they feel bloated. Others haven’t opened their bowels properly for days and assume they simply need a cleanse.
One of the body’s main elimination routes is through the bowels. If waste isn’t moving through efficiently, it makes sense to improve that first. Supporting digestion, hydration, fibre intake (where appropriate), movement, and bowel regularity is often a much more sensible first step than a restrictive detox.
There Isn’t One Detox for Everyone
Different goals require different approaches. Supporting healthy hormone metabolism is different from addressing gut imbalances such as dysbiosis. Supporting the body’s normal handling of environmental exposures is different again.
That’s why I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all detox programmes. The right approach depends on the individual, their symptoms, their health history and, where appropriate, functional test results.
What About Phase 1 and Phase 2 Liver Detoxification?
You may have heard practitioners talk about Phase 1 and Phase 2 liver detoxification.
In simple terms, your liver processes substances in carefully coordinated stages so they can be safely prepared for elimination. These natural processes rely on adequate protein, vitamins, minerals, hydration and healthy digestive function.
A juice cleanse or water fast doesn’t replace these pathways. My focus is on ensuring your body has the nutrients and support it needs so these natural processes can function efficiently.
Common Detox Myths
• Myth: Everyone needs a detox.
Reality: Everyone benefits from supporting healthy lifestyle habits, but not everyone needs the same structured programme.
• Myth: A detox tea flushes toxins.
Reality: Your liver and kidneys are responsible for processing and eliminating waste. No tea replaces those organs.
• Myth: More is better.
Reality: Supporting detoxification isn’t about pushing the body harder. It’s about giving it what it needs to function well.
How Functional Testing Can Help
Rather than guessing, I prefer to test.
Depending on your symptoms, we may explore gut health, hormone metabolism, stress resilience, digestive function, markers such as beta-glucuronidase, inflammation and other areas that help explain why your body may be struggling.
This allows us to build a personalised plan rather than following a generic detox found online.
My Approach
Before I ever recommend supporting detoxification, I want to know that your foundations are in place.
Are you eating enough protein?
Are you drinking enough water?
Are your bowels moving regularly?
Are you sleeping well?
Is your gut functioning properly?
Does your body have the nutrients it needs?
Only then do we consider what additional support may be appropriate.
That’s why my philosophy is always: Test, don’t guess.
